What to See and Do at the Iwatayama Monkey Park
Observe the Japanese macaques
Observing the Japanese macaques is of course the top thing to do at Iwatayama Monkey Park. You will see lots of adult monkeys, but you may even see some baby monkeys!
π Explore Kyoto’s Iconic Landmarks in a Day! Join the PERFECT KYOTO 1-Day Bus Tour to visit must-see sites like Fushimi Inari Shrine, Sagano Bamboo Forest, Kinkaku-ji Temple and more. This comprehensive tour is ideal for travelers with limited time.

The snow monkeys here are wild, but used to humans, and will wander about freely quite close to visitors, which may be disconcerting at first. Park staff is, however, around, and will shoo off any monkey they deem too close.
However, it’s best to follow the rules so you can interact safely with the Japanese macaques: don’t look them in the eye (they consider it aggression), and, of course, do not touch, pet or harass them in any way. Treat them with respect and you will have an enjoyable visit to this unique park.
Staff at the park feed the Japanese macaques three times a day, which is why they are conditioned to congregate in the park. If you happen to be in the park at feeding time, you can observe them being fed.
πΈ Experience Kyoto’s Nightlife and Cuisine! Dive into the local food scene with the Kyoto Night Foodie Tour. This 3-hour evening tour explores the Gion and Pontocho districts, offering a variety of traditional dishes and insights into Kyoto’s culinary culture.
Feed the Japanese snow monkeys
Want to feed the snow monkeys at Iwatayama Monkey Park?

You have to buy snacks for the monkeys (usually little chunks of apple, bananas, or peanuts) at the park, and feed them from within an enclosure for your safety and theirs.
The feeding hut has wire mesh, and if you hold out the food close to the mesh, the monkeys will reach out their little paws and take the food.
π Experience Geisha Culture Up Close! Join the Discover Geisha Arts: Gion Cultural Walk & Geisha Show to learn about the traditions and arts of geisha. This 3-hour tour includes a guided walk and an authentic geisha performance.

From the viewing area, you will see all of Kyoto spread out beneath you. There is also a view over the mountains and forest.
